Notes & Reflections

In the first set of verses, the Psalmist portrayed God as our Shepherd.

He protects and guides His people through every part of life. He is continually providing out of the abundance of His hands.

In these last two verses, however, our Shepherd becomes our host. His people are given a spot at His magnificent table. He has prepared them a meal. The chapter ends in the “house of the LORD.”

The Psalmist paints us a picture of abundance. He says that his head is anointed and his cup overflows. He has more than enough blessing and fatness. All of this happens in the midst of his enemies, because even they are unable to prevent all that God has for His people. Indeed, “if God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31).

What assurance this must bring him. What assurance this must bring us. God’s grace is plentiful and forever enjoyable. No one can thwart it, and it was through His grace that we were allowed to have access to His presence through Christ Jesus our Lord.

He is a God who continually serves His people.

He is a God who is always welcoming us to be with Him and who is personally a part of our lives, now and forever.

How can sinners sit at God’s table and dwell in His house forever?

Sinners have no right to God’s presence on their own, but through His grace in Christ Jesus our Lord they are given access to Him, welcomed as guests at His table, pursued by His goodness and mercy all their days, and brought to dwell in His house forever, where no enemy can take away what God has for His people (Psalm 23:5–6; Romans 5:1–2; Romans 8:31; John 14:1–3).
