The Light for His People

SCRIPTURE COLLECTION

Today's Scripture Passage

Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

John 8:12

Notes & Reflections

The men and women in Jesus' day were waiting for the Messiah to arrive. In fact, right at the end of the Old Testament we hear Malachi say this,

"But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall."

That "sun of righteousness" is a phrase that speaks of the Son of God. The one who would rescue his people and the one who would fix the curse of Genesis 3. This is the Lord who would be the light that would shine, not only on his own people, but also on the whole world.

Many religions in our day claim to be truth. They claim to have the way to God and the path that leads to salvation and a Heaven of some sort. Indeed, the whole world is blindly going after anything that seems to have even the slightest glimmer of hope. We've watched them run from man to man, collecting any teaching that flowed through self-righteousness, arrogance, philosophy, and charisma. Yet, with each so-called way to God, their "deliverers" waste away in the earths soil only to be eaten by worms. These great claims of truth and light only lead to more and more darkness. The world's "messiahs" turn out to be nothing more than blind men who think that a blade of grass is somehow a switch that opens the door to eternity. Their claims lack evidence and have no stability.

Not so with Christ.

Christ sets himself far above all others. He speaks words of truth that have proved truthful through the ages. He lived a life that no man could critique or call into question. He did works and wonders that no other so-called messiah could do in his best magic show. And unlike the rest, he has no grave and all the worms that would have loved to feast on his body, have all starved to death. He was the Son of God, the one who shone forth the exact image of the Almighty. He was the Word incarnate, the great I AM, the Way, the Truth, and the Life. His radiance shone in this dark world with such brilliance that even the demons shuttered. This Jesus is the Light of the World.

He says, "whoever follows me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life. No other religion has such bold words. No other god has such power and demand that drives men to their feet for thousands of years. No other god gives life, but only bark orders of self-reliance and law. No other god compares to Jesus, and no other god has the ability to muster any sort of light at all.

Only Jesus. He is the light of the world. He is the Messiah. He is God.

Cling to Him today.

Theology Deep Dive: Claims of Jesus

I want to set Jesus far above all other religions today and I want to do this through listing his own claims. He was filled with a boldness and confidence that puts all others to shame, and he was never proven wrong. Here are a few:

1. He claimed equality with God. (John 5:18-21; John 8:19; John 10:29-30)

2. He claimed to be revealer of the Father. (Matthew 11:27; John 1:18)

3. He claimed to be I AM. (John 8:58)

4. He claimed to be the source of eternal life. (John 10:27-29; John 11:25-26)

Is Scripture Sufficient?

Yes, Scripture is sufficient because it provides everything that people will need to please God and everything for salvation. Scripture is the only place to find these two things and the source of ultimate truth which will give guidance and wisdom to anyone who seeks it with all their heart.
