Notes & Reflections
“I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.”
Psalm 9:1
Many things are good in life.
There are joys and pleasures of a vast variety.
When we had our first son, I remember the joy, the fear, and the variety of future hopes and joys we would experience as a family. And they came by the bucketload.
We sat on our couch and stared at his little face, at least until we had to do “important stuff.” I sat him in my lap and turned on the Bible app. I remember thinking, “I want you to know God, my little boy.” I imagined what it would look like to raise him for the glory of God.
After that, God gave our family a dog. She was the best dog (except when it came to trash eating). She was gentle and kind to us and our son. Our son would rest his head on her fur, and at times, he would pull her ears and laugh. She never seemed to mind.
The time passed quickly, and our marriage began to grow with more and more joy. That’s when our daughter was born.
I soon realized that with each person, God filled our home with more and more laughter. Hard, gut-hurting, red-faced laughter. From goofy words, weird dancing, toots, and very sweet moments, our family became so much fun.
We didn’t worry much, even though we had very little. As I look back, I’m not even sure what we had to eat on a regular basis. We lived behind a McDonald’s, so I think that was our main diet. Our house was also small, and the basement had a creepy vibe. But we didn’t care.
We eventually moved into a bigger apartment and then a house. That’s when we had our second daughter, chickens, and another dog.
Year after year, good and bad, God continued to be faithful.
He continued to guide a dad who had no idea how to be a dad, He helped a sick wife face each day as she battled chronic pain and migraines, He helped us through hard births, a car accident, miscarriages, a flooded basement, and the list goes on.
His wonderful deeds are too many to count. The reasons to praise Him are endless. My heart, with all the pain it’s endured, with all the pressure it has felt, with all the happiness it’s embraced, is ready to give thanks to my abundantly gracious and wonderful God.
Indeed, I say with the Psalmist,
“I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart; I will recount all of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High.”
Psalm 9:1-2
Why should a Christian give thanks to God in both good and hard seasons?
A Christian gives thanks in every season because God is faithful year after year, filling our lives with joys we never earned and carrying us through pain, loss, and hardship, and because in Christ every one of His wonderful deeds, even the hard ones, works together for the good of those who love Him (Psalm 9:1–2; Romans 8:28; 1 Thessalonians 5:18).
