Notes & Reflections

The life for a Christian, at times, doesn't look like a rich life. From the outside looking in, it may seem restricted and boring. It may seem stupid and foolish. Indeed, Jesus said whoever wishes to save his life will lose it (Luke 9:24). Losing one's life doesn't carry much appeal to the culture around us. Yet the path of the gospel is a path of death. A Christian is dead to sin (Romans 6:6-7). Christ himself took this path. He laid down his life for the sake of you and I.

In the life we now live, a thing must die in order to bring life. We find little pictures of this in nature. A seed must first go in the ground and die before it can give birth to a vegetable, flower, or tree. Animals must also die in order to nourish the bodies of others who eat them. Fungi and bacteria also break down matter that releases nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus back into the soil. Even the seasons show us a picture of death as the colors change around us. Death is the path to life.

For the Christian such sufferings give way to great glory. Indeed, a glory so great that the riches one finds in this earth are as sand compared to the riches of the glory of Christ. Peter said that we should fix our hope completely on the grace to be brought to us at the revelation of Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:13). The day we see his glory. The day we live in his glory. This is the day that I grow anxious to see.

The riches that such a hope gives now and, in the future, fills the Christians's heart with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory. To set my mind on the love of God that I will experience at its fullest in that day makes the suffering and pain that I face now, seem but for only a moment. The hope of Heaven is the medicine that cures my hearts greatest pain. It is the motivation that drives me to live a life that some may deem foolish. It is a gift that allows my heart to find rest and it is my refuge. To know that God and I are at peace through the work of His son, that I am adopted, forgiven, and loved, is a reality that is Heaven for me, right now.

O, how I long and find great joy in the hope of Heaven.

Theology Deep Dive: Resurrection of the body

Though we speak of Heaven, for many, Heaven is a place where spirits are seen floating around and playing musical instruments. But the Bible speaks of something better than that. It speaks of a new Heaven and a new earth (Revelation 21:1). It speaks of the dead being raised (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). We will have bodies that are more glorious and perfect. Bodies without sickness or pain. Indeed, God's plan for us goes way beyond anything portrayed in earthly movies or cartoons. God's word shows us a day that is beyond our small and sinful imaginations.

Will I recognize people I know now in Heaven?

Definitely! In 1 Thessalonians 4, Paul says that God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep. At the last trumpet, those whom we loved and who trusted in Christ, will come to meet us again. Paul says that this hope is why Christians don't have to grieve like the world grieves, because we will be together again!
